EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Is a form of psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro that uses bilateral stimulation to help clients process traumatic memories and disturbing life experiences. Clients focus simultaneously on a spontaneous association of traumatic memories, feelings, bodily sensations and bilateral stimulation. (either through eye movements or tapping). The EMDR therapy process is guided by an eight phase Adaptive Information Processing Model (see bottom of page).”After successful treatment with EMDR therapy, affective distress is relieved, negative beliefs are reformulated, and physiological arousal is reduced.” Francine Shapiro discovered that certain eye movements reduce the effects of displeasing thoughts. It was originally developed as a treatment for Post traumatic stress disorder. It is now being used to treat personality disorders, complex trauma histories in children, and somatic disorders (phantom limb). For a more in depth understanding visit here.
